About the project
Lockdown2020 is a small crowd-sourcing project run by the Faculty of English and IT Services in 2020 and 2021. It was aimed at any member of Oxford University who wished to record for future generations their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, how it has affected their work, study, departments, college, or even neighbourhood. The aim of the project was to collect material that people feel reflect their 'new normal' existence during the lockdown period following the COVID-19 outbreak 2020. The material is freely available online and also preserved as a time-capsule for future users.
It ran in two phases. Phase 1 collected material during the lockdown of 2020; Phase 2 collected material around the one-year anniversary of Prime Minister Boris Johnson announcing the lockdown.
This crowd-sourcing project was run by the English Faculty and IT Services in collaboration with the Museum of Oxford. Phase 1 was funded by the Higher Education Innovation Fund and ESRC Impact Acceleration Account through the University of Oxford’s COVID-19: Economic, Social, Cultural, & Environmental Impacts - Urgent Response Fund.
Can I use the material in the collection?
The material in the collection has been shared by people from across the country under a Creative Commons licence: CC BY-NC. You may reuse the content for non-commecial purposes as long as you credit the copyright owner. Phase 1: Collection brief from 2020
What material are we collecting?
We are looking for material that describes what life is like for University members living through the lockdown in 2020. It does not have to be spectacular, heroic, or special. What we hope to get is something that will help us remember and others understand what 'normal life' was like for the University during this period.
You can share three kinds of material but you do not have to add all three. Please remember that the material you share will be made available online, so only share what you are happy for others to see.
- A description of your day/plan for your day. This can be as simple or as detailed you like and it can describe a whole day or just part of a day.
- Pictures from your 'new normal' life. Anything that represents your daily life in lockdown, or what is happening in your neighbourhood.
- Your message to the future - share a short time capsule message, describing the current times for future generations. This can be a recorded audio or video file that you upload (max 5 minutes) or something you write.
Who can take part?
Any member of Oxford University is welcome to take part, as long as you are happy to share your text, images or audio/video. You need to read and agree to the terms and conditions and be aware of our privacy statement (available below).
Terms and conditions - what will happen to the material?
The material that you share will be added to our archive. It will also be made available online. It will be used for research and other purposes, as defined in the Terms and Conditions. Read about How we use your personal data for research purposes: https://compliance.admin.ox.ac.uk/research-data.

Phase 2: Collection brief from 2021
Lockdown - one year on
On March 23rd 2020 Boris Johnson in effect announced the first national lockdown. We are now approaching the first anniversary of that and are still living under social distancing and several restrictions, but this time, possibly, with an end in sight. We believe it is important to document these extraordinary times, and are inviting all staff and students at the University of Oxford to contribute to this online archive by reflecting on the past year sharing their pictures, videos, stories, and reflections.
Please add one or more of the following:
- Your reactions to the events of the past year
- A description of a typical day/or plan for your day in lockdown
- What was the 'new normal' life like for you (anything that represented the new way of learning, teaching, social life in 2020-21)
- A message to the future - a short time capsule message for future staff, students, and historians of the University describing the impact of the events over the past year (audio, video, or text)
